A hillside site in the middle of suburbia is designed to give privacy for the Owners' growing family without placing constraints on the freedom to enjoy both indoor and outdoor living. A large outdoor terrace with a water fountain offers the opportunity for play and entertaining. A high glazed block retaining wall protects the terrace. The various shades of blue glaze reflect the ever-changing sky; the amber mocks the nearby aspen trees in the Fall. Italian tile overlaying radiant-heated floors throughout the residence is durable and easy to maintain. Interior walls to be used for the Owner's painting collection are designed to be free of direct sunlight. Indirect lighting follows the hip roof to illuminate the interior kitchen. The glass bridgewalk to the guest quarters is wide enough to use for seating or informal meals during winter months.

Surrounding scrub oak groves influenced the fire resistant design with its standing rib metal roof and stucco over block structural walls. Scrub oak is highly flammable and explosive when burning. Many parts of the country have codes regulating its proximity to buildings.
