A residence and artist's studio for a professional couple who wanted open interior space with excellent natural light and space for the display of art. Their interest in sustainable, low maintenance materials resulted in the use of unfinished high-density concrete block for all structural walls. The concrete floors are radiant heated.

The two-acre southwest hill site has a 25' tall climax stand of scrub oak which separates the house from the main road. The courtyard between the house and studio-garage permits outdoor living on one level. A guest room and office open to a lower terrace.

A steel brise-soleil which penetrates the walls fractures direct sunlight, supports interior indirect lighting and defines activities. Glass garage doors and hall skylights allow natural light to enter spaces that are normally dark. Glass door sidelights ensure cross-ventilation throughout the house. The design of the residence was inspired by a large painting by Dawn Wilde called Santorini shown hanging at the far end of the living room.
